When I booked my flight for Istanbul from Kuala Lumpur, I planed it with a long layover in Dubai so would have an opportunity to see the city and take few photos. I was thinking about it for a long time, I was also confused as to where to go to take just sunrise shot. I must say I got plenty of useful advice and tips from my friends David, Beno, Daniel and Miroslav … After I realized how very hard it would be to reach the top of the buildings, especially in the early morning, I decided it would be best if I went to Palm Jumeirah, it would also be a good place in case I needed to check in my tripod in KL, so I might be forced to use the mini one. Palm Jumeirah has a really nice view of the city and the sun’s position is also ok in the morning. I also researched how to get there and I arranged an online booking to visit the tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa ( apparently tickets are much cheaper if you book online then if you buy once you arrive, you also must choose the time when you want to visit).
My plane landed in Dubai just before midnight. It was too late to go into the city so I just decided stay and wait at the airport till sunrise. It was a little boring but I walked around the airport and explored, got something to eat and played some games on my iPad.
At 4:30am I was trying to take the metro to my destination, but the metro station was not open for work till 6am so I got a taxi. We reached Palm Jumeirah really fast, I had planned for 30min to 1 hour travel time, but I got there in 20min which was cool. I was on location at 5am and sunrise was supposed to be at 6am, perfect timing to get some morning blue hour shots and the sunrise. But I had a really unpleasant surprise. The weather was really humid, and my camera lens was foggy, extremely foggy, I needed to clean it over and over every few seconds, it was that terrible, so I almost did not get any proper shot, it was a huge disappointment. I was able to shoot normally after sunrise for a short time because the sun was already too harsh.
After 7am I went to a nearby hotel to find a taxi back to the city. The city is truly spectacular. The taxi left me next to the nearby metro station and I took the metro to the Dubai Mall station where I went to the top of Burj Khalifa.
I was happy that I could bring my camera tripod to the top with me, but that didn’t help because the sun was too harsh, I didn’t worry over it much because the view was really spectacular. I was really happy, excited and really tired at that point I just enjoyed the view for a while and it was time to go. I was had “breakfast” in the Dubai mall and took a look around, and then it was time to head back to the airport.
My flight for Istanbul was at 2pm. I need to say I was really excited that I would have the chance to shoot photos of dubai from the air, and I especially picked a window seat on the left side of the plane when I was booking my ticket. Like always on my trips something must go wrong and only my row did not have any windows, just a wall. I was wondering how the heck I was lucky enough to pick a seat like that, but I was too tired to worry over it and I fell asleep instantly.
Next stop Istanbul.
